How to Turn Almost Any Fridge Into Hot Pot
A balanced hot pot does not need a long shopping list. Aim for four roles: one protein, one vegetable, one tofu or mushroom, and one starch. The tool scores what you select by role, then recommends a broth that supports the ingredients you already have.
What the readiness score means
- 75–100%: you have a complete meal. Start the broth and slice everything into bite-size pieces.
- 50–74%: the pot will work, but one contrasting texture or a noodle will make it feel complete.
- Below 50%: use the suggested additions to fill the missing roles instead of buying random extras.
Choose broth by what needs support
Delicate seafood, chicken, leafy greens, and tofu are easiest to taste in clear bone, tomato, or mushroom broth. Rich beef, lamb, luncheon meat, potatoes, and tofu puffs can stand up to Sichuan mala. If the fridge contains many unrelated leftovers, tomato is usually the safest bridge.
Prep before the pot boils
Slice dense vegetables thinly, separate enoki mushrooms, thaw frozen meat safely, and keep raw meat on its own plate. Add ingredients in batches so the broth returns to a full boil. Use the generated cooking order as a sequence, then check exact times with the Hot Pot Timer.
